 our courses

  equipment         level 1 - 4

The Clinical Pilates programme pioneered the link between the evolving research on stabilisation
training and the traditional Pilates work. DMA lead the way in modifying pilates for
physiotherapists, by building its programme "from the ground up" and distilling the many variations
of the traditional Pilates repertoire into key components and developing a logical sequence of
research based application to deal with injuries and rehabilitation.

Building on an experienced physiotherapists wide range of assessment and diagnostic skills,
dynamic assessment of injuries is introduced to help diagnose problems more accurately under
functional situations. Facilitation of stabilisation training is a key component and movement
  quality emphasised over strength.

The course structure is designed to begin with a base of work capable of dealing with early stage
rehabilitation up to high level patients. Subsequent levels broaden the base of low level work as
well as presenting more complex exercises. This provides a balanced learning of the most clinically
  applicable repertoire.

The programme is accredited in Australia and New Zealand and widely used within clinics and
hospitals around Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom and Asia and incorporated into the
training of Australian Football League teams, Olympic squads and Institute of Sport programmes.

  matwork              level 1 - 2

Designed to integrate with the equipment series, the matwork / theraband programme
provides an excellent introduction to Clinical Pilates for the clinician and has been established
to keep physiotherapists abreast of the new wave of recent spinal stability research.

Taking the traditional pilates exercises we explore the current evidence that explains the
modifications that were necessary to apply the work in the physiotherapy environment. Real Time
ultrasound examples will further demonstrate different patterns of recruitment and how to avoid
  common mistakes.

You will learn how to quickly and effectively select pathology specific exercises by moving on from
the “neutral spine” concept to directionally biased / specific programmes. We will then develop a
range of tools for reliably correcting aberrant recruitment patterns and differentiate poor
  recruitment from pathomechanics.

The addition of theraband helps provide necessary afferent input to ensure accurate muscle
recruitment in the clinic and more effective home programmes.

After Level 1 matwork you can integrate into the equipment series which will allow you to both
revise and extend your matwork programme and expand your Clinical Pilates repertoire with
equipment based exercises and further expansion of the evidence application.

  real time ultrasound

Real Time Ultrasound is becoming a valuable tool for the physiotherapy profession. This course is
the first to present the growing body of research on RTUS in the physiotherapy field and link in with
the Clinical Pilates programme. Presented by PhD physiotherapists and ultrasonographers it will
provide an introduction on how to use RTUS in the clinic to assist in identifying aberrant patterns of
  recruitment in patients.

  • technology talk
  • theory / research / anatomy lectures
  • clinical hands on, demonstration and practice in small groups
  • presentation of the principles, equipment and technology used in ultrasound scanning.
  • clinical anatomy of the abdominal wall and pelvic floor musculature and their relationships
  • current research findings and evidence for abdominal and pelvic floor dysfunction
  • specific discussion on the reliability and validity of RTUS
  • measurement tools and their interpretation
  • clinical application - patient & equipment setup and preparation
  • normal vs abnormal recruitment patterns

  update            level 1

As an update for your handling skills you will revise the level 1 repertoire and fine tune your exercise
selection and treatment application. Group numbers will be limited to 12 participants with 2
  presenters per course.
Demand has been strong for these revision updates so be early.

  • pre prepared case study.
  • review of evidence on exercise selection criteria.
  • directional bias assessment.
  • revision of reformer / matwork / theraband versions of each exercise from the level 1 repertoire.
  • copy of 2008 booklet.
  • discussion of clinical cases.
